Wasaline operates the year-round passenger, vehicle and freight ferry connection between Vaasa in Finland and Umeå in Sweden. The route crosses the Kvarken Strait, the narrowest part of the Gulf of Bothnia, and provides a direct alternative to a very long drive around the northern end of the gulf.
On 20 March 2026, Stena Line completed its acquisition of NLC Ferry Oy/Wasaline. The Wasaline brand has been retained, and Aurora Botnia continues to operate the existing Vaasa–Umeå timetable as part of the wider Stena Line network.
Aurora Botnia is a modern hybrid ferry designed for passengers, vehicles and freight. Wasaline promotes the route as a sustainable Nordic connection and now states that its operations use biofuels, while the ship combines batteries with its multi-fuel propulsion system.

2026 ownership update: Wasaline is now part of Stena Line, but the Wasaline brand and Aurora Botnia Vaasa–Umeå service continue.
Wasaline has one scheduled route rather than a large network. These three cards show the two travel directions and the day-cruise format sold on the same Vaasa–Umeå crossing.
Vaasa–Umeå gives western Finland a direct road-and-sea connection to northern Sweden and onward routes towards the High Coast, Lapland and Norway.
Umeå–Vaasa is a practical west-to-east link for travellers heading into Ostrobothnia and Finland without driving north around the Gulf of Bothnia.
Wasaline also sells day-cruise products using the same route. Depending on the length of the port stop, passengers may remain aboard or be required to disembark before the return sailing.
The current scheduled Wasaline network is straightforward: Aurora Botnia links Vaasa and Umeå across Kvarken all year. FerryEU retains the original Wasaline visual map as an illustrative asset even if it contains broader historic or regional reference points.

Wasaline is particularly useful for Nordic self-drive travel because Aurora Botnia carries a wide range of passenger vehicles while also providing dedicated pet and reduced-mobility arrangements.
Cars and motorcycles are central to the route. Vehicle check-in uses automated gates that can read the registration number and retrieve the reservation.
Wasaline actively markets the route to camper and touring traffic because it can remove hundreds of kilometres of driving around the Gulf of Bothnia.
Pets must be declared in advance because capacity is limited. The dedicated Pet Lounge on deck 7 has direct access to an outside area.

Wasaline is most compelling for travellers moving between western Finland and northern Sweden. Without the ferry, the road route around the Gulf of Bothnia requires a long detour through northern Finland and Sweden.
For road trips, Vaasa–Umeå can therefore save time, fuel and driver fatigue even before the onboard restaurants and lounges are considered. The route also works naturally with touring itineraries towards the High Coast, Swedish Lapland, northern Norway and western Finland.

Stena Line completed the acquisition of NLC Ferry Oy/Wasaline on 20 March 2026. Wasaline continues to operate under its own brand, while the route and port operation are now part of the Stena Line network.
