Travemünde is both a traditional Baltic seaside resort and one of northern Germany’s most important passenger-ferry gateways to Scandinavia and Latvia.
Travemünde sits at the mouth of the River Trave where it meets Lübeck Bay. Its waterfront mixes a classic German seaside resort atmosphere with constant maritime activity, from sailing boats and cruise vessels to large Baltic ferries passing close to shore.
The broad sandy beach and long promenade are the main leisure attractions. Strandkörbe, cafés and sea views make the resort an easy place to spend a few hours before check-in, while the historic lighthouse and old maritime buildings add character close to the riverfront.
Along the Vorderreihe, restaurants and shops face the Trave channel, providing an excellent viewpoint for watching ferries and commercial ships moving between Skandinavienkai and the Baltic. The museum ship Passat, moored across the river on Priwall, is another distinctive local landmark.
Travemünde is part of Lübeck, whose UNESCO-listed old town is around 20 kilometres inland. Travellers with extra time can combine a ferry journey with Lübeck’s brick-Gothic churches, Holstentor, marzipan cafés and medieval streets.
The surrounding coast includes Priwall, Timmendorfer Strand and other Baltic resorts, while Hamburg is also within practical reach by road and rail. This makes Travemünde a useful gateway for both northbound and southbound road trips.
Skandinavienkai is separate from the resort centre and handles the large international ferries. Current operators connect Travemünde with Malmö and Helsinki through Finnlines, Trelleborg through TT-Line and Liepāja through Stena Line, with selected additional Baltic services appearing seasonally.

Travemünde Ferry Terminal
The terminal is not beside Travemünde’s beachfront railway stops, so foot passengers should plan the final connection carefully. Stena Line advises using local bus links from Lübeck or Lübeck-Kücknitz to the Skandinavienkai terminal and closes check-in before departure.
Finnlines currently operates Travemünde–Malmö up to several times daily and a daily Travemünde–Helsinki service. TT-Line runs the long-established Travemünde–Trelleborg route, while Stena Line operates the direct Travemünde–Liepāja connection.
The main international ferry terminal is Skandinavienkai, north-west of Travemünde’s resort centre. Stena Line lists the terminal at Skandinavienkai, Zum Hafenplatz 1, and the port is well signposted from the A1/A226 road network.
