About the operator

Italy’s largest fast-passenger maritime operator

Liberty Lines was founded in 1993 as Ustica Lines and has grown into Italy’s largest company dedicated to high-speed passenger maritime transport. The company says it carries more than 3.5 million travellers a year with a fleet of more than 30 HSC vessels.

Its core network links Sicily with the Aeolian, Egadi and Pelagie Islands, Ustica and Pantelleria. Liberty Lines also operates the fast Messina–Reggio Calabria service across the Strait and a summer network from Trieste to destinations in Slovenia and Croatia.

The fleet is deliberately passenger-focused: hydrofoils, monohulls, catamarans and next-generation HSC hybrids. These are not conventional RoPax vehicle ferries, so cars and motorcycles do not travel on the normal Liberty Lines high-speed services.

Bicycles, pets and accessibility

Liberty Lines is not a conventional vehicle-ferry operator. Cars and motorcycles are not carried on normal HSC services, while bicycles have narrow exceptions and pets travel under specific safety rules.

Then look at the operational details. These are passenger-only HSC services, so motorists need another operator. Standard bicycles are generally not carried except on the Istrian Coast route, while luggage and pets have precise conditions.

Finally, protect your connection time. High-speed craft can be sensitive to sea conditions, and some island routes make intermediate calls. Use the live sailing status as the final authority on the day of travel.
