Choose the crossing that fits your trip

Normandy from Portsmouth

Compare Caen/Ouistreham with Cherbourg. Caen offers daytime and overnight choices in the published programme, while the Cherbourg product and calling pattern need checking for the selected date. Portsmouth–Le Havre and Poole–Cherbourg are closed.

Brittany from Portsmouth or Plymouth

Compare Portsmouth–St Malo with Plymouth–Roscoff. Roscoff can save road miles for western Brittany, but its seasonal timetable may decide the choice. Plymouth–St Malo is currently unavailable, so use a confirmed alternative before planning around that port pair.

Northern Spain from Portsmouth or Plymouth

Compare Portsmouth–Bilbao, Portsmouth–Santander and Plymouth–Santander. The Basque Country and Cantabria give different onward drives. Plymouth–Santander has no winter sailings, and Bilbao–Portsmouth has a northbound winter gap with Santander as an alternative. Check both directions’ calendars and compare the cabin, meals and nights at sea.

Guernsey and Poole itineraries

Compare Poole–Guernsey with Portsmouth–Guernsey for speed, accommodation and the journey to the UK port. The published Poole–St Malo service runs via Guernsey. From 1 November 2026, the planned Islander triangle runs Portsmouth–Guernsey–Cherbourg–Portsmouth; inspect the exact itinerary and calls.

Compare routes, operators and passenger choices

Each port pair links to separate outbound and return guides. Crossing times are planning guidance, not a live timetable; use the dated sailing for the exact departure, arrival and availability.

How to compare Brittany Ferries fares fairly

Choose the date, passengers and full vehicle dimensions before comparing the ports. A motorcycle, campervan, car with roof box and car towing a caravan do not use the same deck category. Add pet accommodation at this stage, because availability can determine which sailing is practical.

Compare day-seat and cabin choices with the length of the crossing and the number of nights. Some cruise products include accommodation or meals, while other options are selected separately. Read the actual fare inclusions instead of assuming that every Brittany or Condor sailing has the same cabin arrangement.

Then compare the complete road itinerary. Plymouth may save driving for Devon and Cornwall, Portsmouth may suit another starting point, and the French or Spanish arrival port can change many hours of onward travel. Include check-in, a possible hotel and the time you can realistically start driving after landing.

Use the right rules for the route and vessel

Check-in and special arrangements

Brittany’s current passenger guidance uses at least 60 minutes for standard check-in and 90 minutes with pets, subject to earlier instructions for the particular sailing. Guernsey/Condor sailings have their own confirmation and process. Use the ticket’s reporting time and ask about assistance before travel.

Foot passengers and port access

Foot passengers are accepted on bookable passenger sailings, but a freight rotation or an old route page does not prove passenger availability. Portsmouth International Port, Millbay, Poole, Ouistreham and Bilbao/Zierbena each need a specific transfer plan.

Pets to France or Spain versus Guernsey

Brittany’s ordinary-pet rules for France and Spain do not permit foot-passenger pet travel. Condor’s UK–Guernsey rules allow ordinary pets with foot passengers under conditions, but that permission does not extend to France. Check each leg before planning a connection through Guernsey.

Seasonality and service changes

Use the latest operational notice and a dated itinerary. An older annual programme can be superseded by a later closure or vessel plan. A route listed in a destination guide may be retained to explain alternatives even when no current sailing is available.

Current service status and alternatives

Poole–Cherbourg closed in October 2026 and Portsmouth–Le Havre has ended. Plymouth–St Malo is currently unavailable; compare the current Portsmouth–St Malo programme. The November 2026 Islander operating plan changes some Guernsey/Cherbourg itineraries. Check the current sailing rather than relying on an older programme announcement.

Brittany Ferries from the UK: common questions

Which UK ports does Brittany Ferries use?

The routes compared here depart from Portsmouth, Plymouth and Poole. The current mix includes France, Spain and Guernsey, but availability differs by route and date.

Which Brittany Ferries routes go from the UK to Spain?

Compare Portsmouth–Bilbao, Portsmouth–Santander and Plymouth–Santander. The operating calendar, nights at sea, cabin and arrival port determine which option fits the trip.

Can I still book Poole–Cherbourg or Portsmouth–Le Havre?

Those direct services have ended. Their guides are retained to explain the changes and point to current alternatives such as Portsmouth–Cherbourg, Portsmouth–Caen or a suitable St Malo itinerary.

Is Plymouth–St Malo operating?

The operator’s timetable currently marks Plymouth–St Malo as unavailable. Compare Portsmouth–St Malo or Plymouth–Roscoff where their dates suit your trip.

Is Poole–St Malo always a nonstop ferry?

No. The published service operates via Guernsey, with dates and individual sailing arrangements to be checked. Check the calls, any connection and the total journey time before treating it as a direct nonstop crossing.

Can I take my dog as a foot passenger?

The route matters. Ordinary pets are not permitted with foot passengers on Brittany’s France/Spain services. Condor permits ordinary pets with UK–Guernsey foot passengers under conditions, but not on France services. Assistance dogs have separate arrangements.

Do all Brittany Ferries tickets include a cabin?

For overnight Brittany sailings, reserve a cabin or seat while accommodation remains available. The no-accommodation exception is limited to France routes after those places have sold out. Daytime and high-speed products differ; compare the selected fare’s accommodation and meal inclusions.

Does Caen or Bilbao mean the ferry arrives in the city centre?

No. The Caen ferry uses Ouistreham on the coast, and the Bilbao ferry uses Zierbena outside the city. Allow a separate road or public-transport connection when planning onward travel.
