Sassnitz is a Baltic resort and harbour town on Rügen, best known for Jasmund’s white chalk cliffs and as the German gateway for selected ferries to Bornholm.
Sassnitz sits on Rügen’s north-east coast, where a traditional harbour town meets the beech forests and dramatic chalk shoreline of Jasmund National Park. The combination makes it much more than a place to pass through on the way to a ferry.
The Königsstuhl and surrounding chalk cliffs are the area’s defining natural attraction. Walking routes through the national park offer viewpoints over the Baltic and through ancient beech forest, with a visitor centre at the best-known cliff formation.
Closer to town, the old harbour and long pedestrian bridge give Sassnitz a strong maritime character. Fishing boats, excursion vessels, cafés and the submarine museum around HMS Otus add interest around the waterfront.
Rügen is easy to explore from Sassnitz. Binz, Prora, Cape Arkona and the island’s beaches are all realistic additions to a ferry trip, especially for travellers arriving by car or bicycle.
The passenger ferry does not use the small central harbour. Current Bornholm sailings operate from Mukran Port, outside the town centre, so travellers should plan the transfer rather than walking to Sassnitz Stadthafen by mistake.
For onward travel without a car, bus links connect Sassnitz and neighbouring resorts with Mukran, and seasonal rail arrangements can connect the harbour with Bergen auf Rügen for onward German rail journeys.

BORNHOLMSLINJEN operates the Rønne–Sassnitz route to Bornholm on selected sailings, carrying cars, bicycles and foot passengers. The crossing is part of Bornholm’s wider network alongside Ystad and Køge.
