Kvarken is the narrow central section of the Gulf of Bothnia between western Finland and northern Sweden. Rather than a single town, it is a maritime region of low islands, shallow water and rapidly rising land shaped by the last Ice Age.
The Finnish side forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed High Coast/Kvarken Archipelago, recognised for the visible effects of post-glacial land uplift. Around Björköby and Replot, roads and bridges make much of the landscape accessible without a boat.
Replot Bridge, the Saltkaret observation tower and nature trails around Svedjehamn are among the easiest ways to appreciate the flat, fragmented archipelago scenery. Vaasa provides the main urban base with museums, restaurants and rail connections.
On the Swedish side, Umeå adds a lively university city, cultural attractions and access to the Bothnian coast. The ferry terminal itself is at Holmsund, about 20 kilometres south of central Umeå.
Wasaline operates the year-round Vaasa–Umeå route across Kvarken with Aurora Botnia. The 2026 timetable includes multiple weekly and often multiple daily departures, with crossing times varying by sailing and direction.

Aurora Botnia carries foot passengers, bicycles and vehicles. The 2026 timetable varies by day and season, so compare the dated departure and note that local arrival times reflect the one-hour time difference between Finland and Sweden.
Wasaline lists the Vaasa terminal at Vaskiluodon satamakatu 14, 65170 Vaasa, and the Umeå terminal at Blå Vägen 4, 91332 Holmsund. The Umeå terminal is around 20 kilometres from the city centre.
